5th Grade Handbook
Welcome to 5th grade! We are so excited to be your child’s teachers. This will be an exciting year for all of us. The emphasis in fifth grade is supporting responsible work habits, and the transition into middle school. This is also the year to increase more independence and build upon reading, writing and math skills. The students will also enjoy digging into our science and social studies standards.
PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports)
Students who behave appropriately will not only increase their ability to learn, but will also receive commendation through verbal praise, positive notes, treats, etc. We believe in positively supporting behavior! Our objective is to teach all students the effects of positive choices and our system is set up to help students choose their actions responsibly and wisely.
In each classroom the students earn Dojo Points. Weekly they will be able to spend their points at the teacher’s store for passes that they will help us create! It is in your child’s best interest that we work together in relation to thei behavior. Parents should sign up for Class Dojo when the homeroom teacher sends a code home. You will be able to see evidence of student work here as well.
Each week a newsletter will be sent home. Please read the information carefully and respond accordingly. All of our information will be found through weekly emails, the website and Class Dojo. In addition, your child will have a homework folder with any home links and other important information. This folder will home and return to school each day.
Homework is important as it reinforces what is being taught in the classroom. A typical night of homework will include reading for 30 minutes and math homelink sent home each night (except on Fridays, test days, or other exceptions).
We love to celebrate birthdays! Students will be recognized on their birthday during our morning meeting.
