Hi Cherry Drive community! My name is Katherine Finley (Ms. Finley) and I am excited to be a member of the 2nd grade team for the 2021-2022 school year! I recently moved to Colorado from Chicago, but am originally from Ohio. After graduating in 2014 from Miami University in Ohio with a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, I taught 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade. I received my Masters degree in English as a Second Language Curriculum and Design in 2020 from Concordia University Chicago, which has expanded my thinking to create a classroom environment that is supportive and encouraging of students' diverse language and cultural backgrounds. As a new Colorado resident, I am excited for more opportunities to be outside skiing, hiking, and camping. An avid and passionate sports fan, I cheer for the Ohio State Buckeyes, New York Jets, Chicago Cubs, and Cleveland Cavaliers. (There is good reason behind my teams- feel free to ask me sometime!) I also enjoy traveling, reading, sports, trying out a variety of restaurants, and relaxing with my cat, Winnie!
Since the beginning of my career I have been passionate in my commitment to teaching the whole child. I value academic learning equally with students’ self-awareness and social-emotional learning. Getting to know my students individually and mentoring them to become the best version of themselves in the classroom and greater community is a focus on the front of my mind daily. I promise to always share my enthusiasm for learning and strive to make each school day full of wonder, understanding, and creation. My focus will not only be on my instruction, but also on wise choices, compassion, and the power of diversity of thought. Finally, I value collaboration with families in order to bridge home and school. I try to be understanding and responsive to all needs and circumstance, but appreciate honesty and transparency in communication to ensure students feel supported in all aspects of their learning.
I look forward to a great year ahead as I get to know you all!
